Why Your Reputation Matters More Than Your Social Media Following with Kelly Vineyard, MS, PhD

Welcome to the show notes! Remember, this is a brief summary from the How to Market Your Horse Business podcast. You'll want to listen to the entire episode for all the good stuff!
When most equine entrepreneurs think about marketing, the conversation usually starts with social media. Which platform should you use? How often should you post? How do you grow your following?
Sure, those questions matter, but they're not the foundation of a sustainable marketing strategy.
The truth is, your reputation will take you farther than any algorithm ever can. Social media is simply a tool to communicate who you are. The trust you build, the relationships you cultivate, and the way you consistently show up are what create long-term opportunities and loyal customers.
That’s exactly what Kelly Vineyard, PhD of Equivine PhD Equine Nutrition has learned as she’s built her business from the ground up after 16 years of experience in the commercial equine feed industry as an equine nutritionist with Purina Animal Nutrition.
Through Kelly’s story and the lessons she’s learned in the early stages of entrepreneurship, you’ll discover the importance of betting on yourself, building a personal brand with intention, and why authentic relationships create opportunities no algorithm ever could.
Based on our conversation, here are the biggest lessons every equine entrepreneur can apply to build a horse business while letting your reputation lead the way.
Build your reputation before you need it.
Your reputation isn't built overnight. It's the result of consistently showing up, doing excellent work, following through on your commitments, and treating people well.
Every interaction matters, from serving clients to networking at events to engaging online. The more consistently you demonstrate your values and expertise, the more people begin to trust you before they ever inquire about working with you.
Marketing becomes much easier when your reputation starts opening doors for you.
Think of your personal brand as a business asset.
Whether you realize it or not, you already have a personal brand.
The question isn't whether you have one. It's whether you're being intentional about it.
Your personal brand is what people think of when your name comes up in conversation. It's built through your expertise, your personality, your communication style, and the experience people have working with you.
When your personal brand aligns with your business, it becomes one of your greatest marketing assets because people buy from businesses they know, like, and trust.
You don't have to be everywhere.
One of the biggest mistakes I see entrepreneurs make is believing they need to show up on every platform.
Instead of trying to keep up with every trend, focus your energy where your audience actually spends their time.
Consistency on one platform will almost always outperform inconsistency across five.
A focused strategy allows you to create better content, build deeper relationships, and avoid the burnout that comes from trying to do everything.
Relationships create opportunities.
Some of the best opportunities in business don't come from cold leads—they come from relationships you've invested in over time.
Networking isn't about collecting business cards or making a quick sale. It's about genuinely getting to know people, finding ways to serve them, and staying connected.
Those relationships often lead to referrals, collaborations, speaking opportunities, and introductions that no amount of advertising can replicate.
Your network is one of the most valuable investments you can make in your business.
Don't wait until you feel ready.
Every entrepreneur reaches a point where they have to decide whether they're willing to bet on themselves.
Waiting until you feel completely prepared usually means you'll be waiting forever.
Growth happens when you're willing to step into opportunities that stretch you, trust the skills you've developed, and keep learning along the way.
Confidence isn't something you have before you act. You build confidence as you take action.
Stay authentic to who you are.
One of the easiest ways to lose momentum in marketing is trying to sound like everyone else.
People connect with authenticity, not perfection.
Instead of chasing trends or copying someone else's strategy, focus on communicating your values, your expertise, and the unique perspective you bring to the equine industry.
Your authenticity is what helps the right people recognize that you're the right person to help them.
Please hear me clearly. I am not anti-social media. Social media is a helpful tool and can be instrumental in introducing people to your business. Just remember to think long-term, as your reputation is what earns loyalty.
And when you intentionally build your personal brand, invest in meaningful relationships, stay consistent, and have the courage to bet on yourself, you'll create a business that continues to grow long after the latest marketing trend has faded.
Of course, you'll want to listen to the full episode to dig into each of the insights shared and discover how you can apply each one in your horse business!
