Welcome to the show notes! Remember, this is a brief summary from the How to Market Your Horse Business podcast. You'll want to listen to the entire episode for all the good stuff!

If you’re an athlete in the equine industry, it’s easy to believe your results in the arena are the business.

Ride well. Win. Get noticed. Repeat.

And, your performance certainly matters if you want to ride as your career.

But in my conversation with Nicole Graf, one thing also became very clear: your riding is only one piece of your business; not the whole thing.

If you want longevity, sustainability, and new opportunities (like brand partnerships), you have to think bigger.

Here are 5 tips from Nicole Graf to keep in mind as you navigate the business of being an athlete in the equine industry.

1. Treat Your Riding Career Like a Business (Not Just a Passion)

This sounds obvious, but it’s where most riders get stuck.

Nicole pointed out that many riders dream of a full barn and a busy schedule yet never actually step back to ask:

What is my business model?

What am I building toward?

Is this sustainable long-term?

Because horses are a 24/7 commitment, it’s incredibly easy to build something that runs you into the ground instead of supporting your life.

This is where your definition of success matters. Not the rider next to you or the biggest barn at the show.

Yours.

2. Your Personal Brand Matters More Than Your Results

Yes—results matter.

But they’re not enough.

Nicole made it clear that brands aren’t just looking for winners… they’re looking for people.

Are you relatable?

Are you authentic?

Do people feel connected to you?

Because from a brand’s perspective, visibility alone isn’t the goal. It’s connection.

This is where many equine athletes miss opportunities.

They think: “My riding speaks for itself.”

But today, your audience—and your story—are part of what you bring to the table as a business.

3. Stay Approachable (It’s a Competitive Advantage)

Nicole didn’t jump straight to strategy or monetization. She talked about approachability.

In a sport that can feel exclusive or intimidating, she emphasized:

Talk to people at shows

Engage with your followers

Don’t position yourself as “above” your audience

Why does this matter?

Because connection builds loyalty and long-term support. And those are the things that actually grow a business.

4. Use Social Media as a Storytelling Tool (Not Just a Highlight Reel)

Nicole was very clear here.

Your job is not to look perfect. Your job is to be real.

How do you do that?

Show behind-the-scenes moments. Talk about hard days. Let people see what it actually takes to get to where yo uare.

Brands aren’t only looking for champions.

They’re looking for real people with real stories to tell.

And that comes from how you show up on social media day-to-day—not just on show day.

5. Build Relationships with Brands (Don’t Just Ask for Sponsorships)

If you want sponsorships, don’t start with, “Can you sponsor me?”

Start with:

Why do you genuinely love their product?

How does it fit into your life and riding?

How can you represent them well?

If you’ve been wondering how to navigate what to expect with brand partnerships, Nicole says you can expect to get product, not payment, early on in your career.

Your value grows as your audience and influence grow, so keep showing up and doing the work. Paid sponsorships are available, but don’t expect it right out the gate.

Above all, as you grow and build your equine business as an athlete, remember the riders who thrive long-term are the ones who think strategically, build real relationships (with people and brands), and create something sustainable.

Of course, you'll want to listen to the full episode to dig into each of the insights shared and discover how you can apply each one in your horse business!
